The Shire of Darton > For Newcomers

Welcome

So, what's this all about then?

We recreate various aspects of the Middle Ages and Renaissance. We do this both through individual research and through recreating clothing and kit, each to his own level of interest and ability. We hold feasts, tournaments and revels where we get dressed up and eat medieval food, attempt to get a feel for a medieval tournament 'a plaisance' and generally have fun. We also have the occassional 'collegium' when we arrange classes on both theoretical and practical topics.

One of the ways we do all this is by taking on a 'persona'. We pick a person who didn't but could have lived in a certain time and place, and that is the person we 'play' at our events. This is why we have alternate names listed in the contact list, for example. Having a persona can assist us with our research, as it focuses our attention on the daily life of people, as well as the enjoyment of our events.

Our minimum requirement for participation is 'an attempt at pre-1600's clothing', and good behaviour. It is easy to get involved. If you want to come along to one of our events or join our club, your first point of call would be our chatelaine. If you want to join the SCA, you can download a membership application from the SCA New Zealand website here.

For more information about the SCA in the Wellington Region, feel free to download our brochure here. If you would like to print it to give to a friend, there is a high quality version here.

There are some excellent sites around that explain about the SCA and what we do. One is Life in the Current Middle Ages.
